This logo was designed for my school’s English literature club, Fenestella, in which I was a part of the last three years. Even though I’ve not been so active there since becoming a sophomore, I always feel a sense of familiarity whenever I hear the club’s name. And, thanks to a request from Jiwoo, a good friend of mine, I created this fitting logo to promote the Facebook page.

The logo is basically a quill pen, a popular device for authors and poets back in the days. While the lower half of the feather retains the typical shape, the upper half is composed of the word ‘enestella.’ As for the ‘F,’ it is warped into the tip of the pen. The relative size difference of ‘f’ compared to the other letters both show the importance of the pen tip and makes up for the fact that the ‘f’ is not written in uppercase despite its position.

The subtle gradient from black to navy blue to a turquoise green was what came into mind when I thought of the process of ‘writing.’ Even though the process might not be active, like dancing, or expressive at first glance, like visual arts, the subtlety of stirring up feelings with sublime choice of words and their positioning is what makes literature so intriguing: and, in my opinion, how the brilliant turquoise is hidden behind the placid black and navy blue reflects the quality very well.

Interestingly enough, this wasn’t made with a ‘warp tool’ in Illustrator to warp the letters into the shape of a feather. Instead, I manually sketched the individual letters, only to trace them with a pen tool on-screen later. Though the method might have been crude, I’m glad that it did the job.
